Cattail fence
Dean Rusk Park, Atlanta, GA
In 2007, the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs commissioned me to create a quarter mile of theme guard railing to encircle the new stormwater “Pond at Dean Rusk Park” in southwest Atlanta. I proposed the cattail theme to add an organic element to the man-made environment.
The “Cattails” railing was created using traditional blacksmithing techniques. I hand-forged over 450 leaves and 200 cattail stalks for the railing from mild steel.
The concept was derived from nature; around ponds, lakes and other natural wetlands, cattails grow along banks, providing the water with a natural filtration system. As Dean Rusk Park is located in an urban environment, I wanted to bring nature back to this man-made environment. On a sunny day the shadows cast by the railing add a natural rhythm, blending the railing with the environment, rather than detracting from it.
